American Roulette

Although this version or roulette is called American, its roots are derived from the European roulette which was developed in France. The name roulette comes from the French word meaning small wheel. But although its roots are European, American roulette still has a history of its own. It was and remains till this day one the most favoured and popular table games in casino and online casino history.

As mentioned earlier, roulette was first introduced in France in the 18th century. It was the introduction of a fast moving wheel by a French mathematician that led to the invention of a new game. Although the legality of gambling switched in various European countries, the game managed to settle in Europe in Monte Carlo after being adapted to a numbered wheel with a single zero (0). Due to the French Revolution many immigrants fled from France towards the United States and it was in New Orleans where most French settlers landed. They brought with them many European table games which included the games of Baccarat and French Roulette (which was later re-introduced as European roulette). As this type of roulette consisted of thirty six numbers and a single zero (0), most Americans could not accept the appeal of roulette and it was therefore adapted a new American style. The original American roulette contained the standard numbers from one to thirty eight and single zero (0) but was also added other bankers’ pockets; the double zero (00) and the symbol of an American eagle; this represented American liberty. Whenever the ball landed on the American eagle symbol, single zero or double zero on the wheel, the house would claim all bets on the table unless bets were placed on those particular symbols. However unfortunately players were not so accepting with the new development of this type of roulette as it minimised their chances of winning and giving the house a greater advantage. Therefore the game was changed yet again while copying certain rules and regulations of the European roulette. The only difference was that American roulette kept both the single (0) and double (00) zero in its wheel. This game has a higher house advantage for the casinos in which it was played than in European roulette. However as mentioned earlier, the rules and regulations of the American roulette remain the same as with European roulette. A player would need to exchange cash for chips and is then given a certain amount of time to place their bets on the roulette layout table. Once the time has expired, and the croupier indicates that no more bets will be accepted, he will spin the wheel and the small white ball in opposite directions. Once the ball has stopped spinning and lands in a numbered pocket, it will reveal the winning number of the pocket. Any player, who has placed bets on the winning number, will receive winnings according to the odds of the bet. There are many different bets that can be placed by players. These include inside bets which are bets on the actual number on the roulette table (either as single numbers including the zero and double zero or grouped / adjacent numbers). Such bets include the straight up bet which is a bet on a single number has a payout of 35 to 1; the split bet which is a bet on two adjacent numbers and has a payout of 17 to 1; the street bet which is a bet on three numbers in a line and has a payout of 11 to 1; the corner bet which is a bet on a join corner and has a payout of 8 to 1; the basket bet which is a bet on the first five numbers and has a payout of 5 to 1; the line bet which is a bet on six numbers on two adjacent line and has a payout of 5 to 1. American roulette also includes the possibility for players place outside bets where bets are placed on particular grouped numbers such as columns and dozens where bets are placed on either three columns or three dozen respectively at a payout of 2 to 1; red or blacks, odd or even. Such bets also include the column bet which has a payout of 2 to 1, the dozen bet which has a payout of 2 to 1, the red, black, even, off, low or high bets which have a payout of 1 to 1 respectively.

As travelling to land based casinos has become harder over the years, the popularity of online roulette has been increasing steadily. Many online casinos offer both the American roulette and the European roulette. Thanks to the advancement of roulette software, online players are able to play both live roulette and RNG roulette (virtual American roulette). The rules and regulations of American roulette apply in both versions of the game however the only difference is that player will either get to play with virtual croupiers at their own pace or with real live dealers through an online transmission from within a land based casino. American online roulette offers online players the chance to combine the best of both an American roulette as well as the security, fun and safe environment in which it is played.

Casino roulette as well as Online Casino roulette offer both the American and European roulette. However it is up to the player and the intention for which they are playing the game that is dependent on the choice between these two roulette games. This means that if the player is a high roller, they tend to go for the European roulette where the house pocket is simply the single zero (0), while the American roulette has two house pockets; the single zero (0) and the double zero (00). However many roulette tables offer players the chance to choose the right table for them depending on the maximum and minimum betting amounts they are willing to use. This means that whether playing online roulette or casino roulette, the stakes are listed beforehand. Although American roulette is an easy and simple game to play, many players may make use of the multiple roulette strategies in order to better their chances of winning.
