Roulette Gambling

The game of roulette has been around for centuries and although it is best known today as a gambler’s game, it was no always so. Roulette originally began as a board game pertaining the name ‘roulette’ from the small rotating wheel which was used. It was only in the eighteenth century that roulette began adopting a gambling nature and it was because of this that is was banned from many countries such as France, England and Germany. During the nineteenth century the popularity of roulette was on the increase as the brothers Blanc introduced a new setup to the roulette layout by including the zero (0) as a form of competition between the house and the players. Due to the game being banished, the Blanc brothers moved this beloved game to the only city that still allowed gambling; Monte Carlo. This is where the first forms of casinos were developed until roulette began to grow in popularity in the United States. It was there that major gambling cities such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City were developed.

Many players from around the world will travel to such cities in order to play the most popular table game in history; roulette. Although for some players it is less possible for them to travel often enough to such gambling cities, they will none the less not miss out on the opportunity to play their favourite game thanks to the development of online roulette. Online roulette not only offers players the chance to play from the comfort of their own while still being able to gamble and win large sums of money, but they also offer players the opportunity to play free roulette. Free roulette is being offered by many online casinos as a practice mode for any players who wish to perfect their roulette strategie and get better acquainted with the rules, odds and betting types within the roulette game. As roulette has now since become a popular gambling game, it was only a matter of time that payout odds were developed in order to encourage certain betting types. For starters, it is important to mention that, depending on the type of casino where roulette is being offered, players are given the choice of two different types of roulette; American roulette and the European game of roulette. Apart from the structure of their roulette wheels, these two roulettes differ due to the introduction of an additional zero type which was added to the American roulette; the double zero (00). Throughout the ages, the casino / house sought out ways to gain the upped edge from players. Although this at times caused much disapproval among players (thus causing the roulette game setup to change a number of times), a fraction of a house edge still remained within the game. This house advantage gave the game the competition it needed to attract as many gambling players as possible who were in the hopes of beating the house advantage. In American roulette the house edge is at 5.26% thanks to the addition of the additional double zero (00). However the house edge of European roulette is half of that percentage as it only includes the single zero (0) in its roulette layout.

A casino roulette table is set up in the same way no matter the type of roulette the player is playing. Although there may be different names being used to name particular grouped bets, the numbered layout remains the same. At the top of the table, the zeros (whether the single zero alone or the double zero as well as the single zero) are marked in green. Then the numbers from one to thirty six are placed in numerical order in three columns of twelve changing between the colours red and black. Any bets placed within these numbered fields are referred to as inside bets. All other bets which include grouped numbers such as a black and red bet, a dozen bet, an odd and even bet, a high and low bet are referred to as outside bets as they are located around the parameter of the layout. As this is a gambling game, roulette also includes a number of payout odds for each different betting type. From the inside bets: A straight up bet which covers a single number will have a payout odd of 35 to 1; a split bet which covers two adjacent numbers will have a payout ratio of 17 to 1; a street bet which covers three adjacent numbers will have a payout ratio of 11 to 1; a corner bet which covers four adjacent numbers will have a payout ratio of 8 to 1; and finally a six line bet which covers six adjacent numbers will have a payout ratio of 5 to 1. For the outside bets: a dozen bet which covers all numbers selected within a particular dozen of either 1 – 12, 13 – 24 or 25 – 36, the payout ratio will be 2 to 1; a red and black bet which covers all red coloured or all black coloured numbers will have a payout ratio of 1 to 1; a high and low bet which covers all numbers either between 1 and 18 or 19 and 36 will have a payout ratio of 1 to 1; a odd and even bet which covers either all even or odd numbers will have a payout ratio of 1 to 1 and finally a column bet which covers all numbers in the selected column will have a payout ratio of 2 to 1. As in all gambling entities, roulette will give out all winnings per winning bet immediately and players have the chance of winning large sums of money at one go. But due to the manipulation of some roulette strategies, all roulette tables have wagering limits which need to be abided by the players. This means that the minimum and maximum betting amounts are controlled by the house / casino.

Roulette has come a long way since its first development that made it into a major gambling sensation. However just like all gambling games, this is also controlled by the appropriate authorities making sure that the game is being played fairly and that no manipulation of results can be made by either the players or the casino itself. This is also a reason why online roulette has become a popular destination for roulette players as it also offers a safe and secure environment for online players.
