Roulette History

Roulette is one of the oldest and most popular casino games in history. With the advancement of technology and the increased development of online gaming, Online Roulette has become a favoured past time for all players who enjoy playing their favourite game from the comfort of their own home. Making use of some of the most advanced Roulette Software in the online gaming industry many online casinos feature both Live Roulette as well as virtual roulette. However before one can understand the concept of online roulette, it is important to know how roulette came to be and how to play roulette.

Games with a wheel and ball had been played for centuries by Romans, Chinese, Egyptians and consequently spreading across Europe through trade. Although there is no substantial proof of the origins of the roulette and such games such as the English Roly Poly game, what is certain and has been agreed by historians is the fact that the first man to invent the actual roulette wheel was Balaise Pascal in France in the 1700s. This mathematician was so keen in finding the perfect machine for perpetual movement that before he knew it he was coming up with the concept for roulette which began to be played in France. This motion machine was the beginning to the introduction of one of the most world famous casino games in history. In the 18th century however, England began to ban gambling while in France it grew even stronger. Royalty became more interested in the concept of gambling as they began to partake themselves. So much so, that Prince Charles of Monaco introduced gambling houses. The name Roulette itself came from the French word meaning small spinning wheel. The original roulette game was comprised of an E.O wheel which only included forty pockets marked with the letter E (for evens) on twenty pockets and the letter O (for odds) on the other twenty pockets. Unfortunately later on in the 19th century, gambling became illegal in France and two French brothers by the name of Blanc, decided to continue developing the roulette game in Germany. They introduced the single zero style roulette wheel which is still used today in European Roulette. The purpose for the single zero was to create competition between this type of roulette game and the old roulette type which did not contain the zero.

The roulette game spread across Europe and the United States in the 1800s making it one of the most popular casino games being played at the time. However when gambling became illegal in Germany the Blanc brothers moved their game to the last remaining legal gambling hubs in Europe in Monte Carlo. They established one of the most elite destinations for the most privileged Europeans who wished to play in a legal gambling environment. This started off the new trend of casinos. The French single zero roulette game made its way to the south of the United States in places such as New Orleans and Mississippi and moved onto the west where Las Vegas was later deemed the most popular and legal gambling destination in the United States. However when the roulette game first arrived in the United States, it was not as popular with American gamblers as with the European players as they felt that their chances of winning were very slim. Therefore, they decided to better the game by adding additional bank pockets in order to create more competition between the house and the players themselves; the double zero (00) as well as the symbol of an American eagle. These were added to the roulette wheel as an additional bank pocket. In the early forms of American Roulette in the late 19th century, the numbers one through twenty six, plus a single and double zero and the American eagle symbol were used as pockets within the roulette wheel. The American eagle symbolised the American liberty which brought more excitement, interest and patriotism to the game itself. However later on the eagle’s symbol lost its tradition and disappeared as a feature on the roulette wheel leaving it with only the numbers and the zeros. According to the old gambling books, whenever the ball was spun and landed on either the two types of zeros or the eagle symbol (which were all banker marks), the house would claim all bets on the table unless a bet was placed on these same symbols on the table. Should a player have placed a bet on any of these, the pay was for twenty seven to one which amounted to the same as all sums bet on any single number. It was also in the United States that the idea of placing the roulette wheel on top of the table came to be together with a layout. This was in order to prevent gamblers and table operators from cheating as the wheel was originally located on a round table surrounded by gamblers. However although the roulette game was developed in various ways between the two continents, they separately attracted different kinds of gamblers. In the United States roulette started off attracting lower class gamblers who would gather in underground dens while in Monte Carlo it remained an elite game being played in elegant casinos.

After the development of the two main roulette games, the American roulette and the European Roulette, the only casino towns knows in the 1900s were Monte Carlo with the traditional French roulette which later also led to the development of European roulette with single zero wheels and Las Vegas with the American double zero wheel. Although both games derived from France, they still include some difference which has attracted different types of players throughout the ages. The objective of the game remains constant throughout the various versions whereby the players seek out ways to gain the upper hand and beat the house odds. Although roulette strategies have been developed in the past few years, roulette still remains a game of chance and players are given the opportunity to choose from placing either inside bets or outside bets.
